EFF THAT! I’m Jumping in!

Well, after much debate and mulling over of “issues”, I’ve finally made the serious decision to take the path of the Indie Book Author for my novels.

For the most part, I’m a “Do it myself” kind of guy. Ever since the early years of the my creative life, I’ve always wanted and had total control over everything I’ve ever made. Even when collaborating with friends, I’ve always been at the highest level of decision-making concerning a joint project from original board and video game ideas to comics, graphic novels, novels, television and film concepts. The vision I have for my books is a specific one. One that I rather not leave in the hands of others too much if I can help it.

With today’s technology and multi-media social tools, “anyone” with enough drive, sense, and savvy to use them, can reach people across the globe. I salivate at the all the possibilities.

As some of you know, I’ve been working on a Dark Fantasy Novel “AMACHI”. It will be my first Indie Book Project, birthed back in 2006 with a spark from my wife. It’s definitely an epic fantasy tale filled with action, fight scenes, magic, “natural” powers of the mind, body, soul, and spirit. You’ll hear much more about it as I bring it to publication, and it’s definitely a story I want to share with the world.

Now, of course, the journey to publication, traditional or inide, is jam-packed with obstacles. Creatively, “Don’t worry about it. I got this!” Business wise, “I’ve a lot to learn.” But guess what? we’re always learning.

I wanted to write stories so I learned how to type. I wanted to write stories better so I learned/am still learning the craft of story telling. Back in the day, I wanted a website, so I learned HTML code. I wanted to make/augment graphics for my site, so I learned how to use photoshop and fireworks.

I wanted to write screenplays, so I learned screenwriting. I Also plan to make a short film in the next two years, and hopefully a feature a couple more years in the future. I have a lot to learn, but learning isn’t a problem when it’s something you love.

Besides, people are doing it right now. Making films and publishing books. So, why can’t I? The only thing separating me from them, you from them, us from them is time(they’re already doing it) and know how(they already know how to do it). I can’t do anything about time other than use what I have left to learn what I have to in order to do what I want. Simple.

Fact: Indie publishing is hard. Yeah, so is writing a novel. I’ve never let difficulty deter me from a goal before because there is a solution to every problem. That’s why you research, plan, and strategize.

At any rate, what do you do? Holding your creative future in your hands, you stand at the edge of cliff overlooking a turbulent sea of overwhelming obstacles and wondrous possibilities. Sink or swim, do you jump in, take your chances, and face obstacles head on or do you back away hoping things will get easier somewhere down the line?
