Gamer Woes

Currently I’m playing two games to which there is no end and you can’t really “complete” as far as traditional video games go. They are Overwatch and The Sims 4, both on Xbox One. Those are games I can just pick up and play anytime, have some fun, and stop at my leisure.

The sims 4

Granted The Sims 4 is a continuous game and your characters grow, gain skills, and rise in their careers, but other than the drama or story you decide to make for them, there really is no story you have to complete.

Overwatch

Overwatch has story, each character a storyline, but when you play the game there is no real story that you’re worried about completing. It’s just about “let’s beat the other team!”, kill streaks, and getting highlights or “Play of the Game” recognition.

Most times though, as a writer, I want to be immersed in an interactive storyline, learn characters in-game and throughout, defeat bosses, clear levels, and see a game through to completion. For some reason though, I can’t seem to pick one as of late. I’ve got a major case of indecisiveness. Every time I try to pick a game and start playing its like a fear of commitment comes over me and I lose interest real quick and turn it off.

I own a couple good games I haven’t finished, so its not like I don’t have a pool to choose from. Owning games you haven’t finished seems like a waste of money to me. It’s like buying movie dvds and only watching them half way through. Maybe I corrupted myself with so much Overwatch and other online multiplayer games of the like. You kind of get used to the quick fix, jump in jump out, instant action routine, where a story driven game takes time and build up, just you against the computer inching towards the ultimate payoff.

Either way, I’m gong to force myself to play and finish one of these games sitting before me.

I’m choosing between:

  • Mass Effect: Andromeda
  • Rise of the Tomb Raider
  • The Evil Within
  • Alien Isolation
  • Gears of War 4

I might have to pull a Negan “eeny meeny miny moe” to find my next victim.

I’ll let you all know which I pick. May throw up some gaming footage also as I play through it.
