30 Days Of Writing: Day 2

How many characters do you have? Do you prefer males or females?

From age 12 or so until now? Hundreds. I want to say thousands but I think that would be a bit of an exaggeration. It’s definitely hundreds though.

I prefer female characters actually. Most of my characters are female because I’ve “seen” males do pretty much everything. So, I’m always a bit more impressed when I come across female characters. Not the “bubblegum bad girls” that are tough to chew and even harder to swallow though.

Let’s face it. Men and women are different physically, mentally, and emotionally. So, I think characters of both sexes have a blue print for basic behavior. Females can be rough, tough, no-nonsense, get the job done, kick-ass and still be feminine. They would just perform said behaviors/actions in a uniquely feminine way. I don’t like characters that seem to be more male than female in there actions and the way they handle situations, unless there’s an express reason for their masculine behavior. Some type of trauma or training or SOMETHING.

  1. I feel bad saying this but all of my work contains female main characters, with the males taking the supporting roles. I guess I just feel more comfortable with them, but until I read your post, I never even gave it a second thought. I may have to take that into consideration and try something different in the future.

    1. It’s always good to step outside the box. How do you think you’d do with a male main character?
